Our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor explains what to expect from a semen analysis
Approximately 1 in 8 U.S. couples experiences some level of infertility, which can lead to frustration and disappointment. David T. Vandermolen MD, the medical director of our Northern Louisiana fertility clinic, has dedicated himself to offering our patients leading-edge fertility treatments. During the fertility evaluation process, he will complete a full assessment of both partners, which will include a semen analysis. The results of this type of male fertility testing can provide a valuable roadmap of how best to proceed.
A review of the infertility evaluation process
As part of a complete infertility work-up, Dr. Vandermolen usually recommends testing for both the female and the male partner. Many people believe that infertility only affects women, but about 33% of cases are related to male factor infertility. The initial fertility testing will involve bloodwork and a physical exam for our female patients. For male partners, our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor will obtain the male patient’s history and order a semen analysis to get a better picture of any male infertility factors.
Breaking down the semen analysis
With this male fertility test, your partner will provide a sperm sample to the lab for evaluation. Generally, we suggest abstinence for a two to five full days before producing a sample to ensure the most accurate results.
The skilled andrologists in the lab will examine the sperm and look at the following factors.
- Concentration (count)
- Morphology (shape)
- Semen Volume
- Motility (movement)
- pH Levels
- White blood cell presence
Once Dr. Vandermolen receives the details of the semen analysis, he can determine the next steps. If the fertility testing shows a low sperm count or other abnormal results, he may order hormone levels including testosterone and FSH and then make a referral to a urologist. This is a physician who specializes in the male reproductive system. To increase the odds of successful conception, our Northern Louisiana fertility doctor may also advise moving forward with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) depending on the amount of motile sperm in the ejaculate.
